Amesema Kamishna Komba.

Despite news of wildlife poaching in Tanzania the current statistics show that the country is generating nearly 4 billion USD in the tourism sector; equal to 13% of the GDP MOblog can report.

Speaking to invited dignitaries at the cocktail party organized by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dar es Salaam, Chargé d’affaires Mr. Hans Koeppel said that after gold, tourism is the largest source of foreign exchange bringing 1.7 billion USD.

He said that for nearly 50 years the ITB has been the driving force in the worldwide travel industry with more than 170,000 visitors. Among these 113,000 trade visitors and 11,000 represented companies from 180 countries.

Mr Koeppel further noted that it opens its doors on Wednesday 5th March through to Sunday 9th March 2014. “About 80 Tanzanian companies such as hotels, tourism associations and tour operators are going to present Tanzania as a top travel destination to the world´s tourism professionals represented in Berlin,” “Next week you will have the chance to promote Tanzania’s image as a top tourist destination with highly attractive and unique sites.” He noted.

He further said that regular participation in the ITB for the last decades has given Tanzania access to lucrative markets not only in Europe but worldwide. “German tourists to Tanzania rank only fourth by numbers, but the picture changes when you look at the length of the stay as well as the return travels,” he added. Mr Koeppel underscored that their common goal is strengthening the cultural and economic ties of the two countries and the ITB offers a golden opportunity to foster the exchange of German tourists and Tanzanian citizens.
    DSC_0560
He said that from its humble beginnings nearly 50 years ago, the ITB has evolved to be the world’s leading travel trade show. Exhibitors from 180 countries on 160,000 square meters attract 170,000 visitors and generate 5 billion Euros in revenues.

“Nevertheless, I am happy that around 80 Tanzanian tourism companies will be part of the ITB since there is still great potential in the German market,” “In order to tap into this potential, to mine this green gold vein, we need to start by securing its pillars. Safety comes first: this golden rule applies to any major endeavor,” “But especially to tourism.

It is therefore in all of our foremost interest to keep peace and prevent any strike – as for instance the bombings in Zanzibar this week - from putting our common endeavor at risk,” he said.He clarified that natural resources and wonders are under pressure by climate change and the recent poaching boom will need local and international cooperation to curb the malpractices.
    DSC_0553
On his part, Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Lazaro Nyalandu said that the ITB will host the world. He responded to wildlife poaching by saying that there needs to be a government call for a global ban in the trade of ivory and rhino horn, as a new wave of poaching is threatening its elephant and rhino population.

Nyalandu said a new census at the Selous-Mikumi ecosystem, one of the country's biggest wildlife sanctuaries, revealed the elephant population had plummeted to just 13,084 from 38,975 in 2009, representing a 66-percent decline. He said elephant slaughter in Tanzania declined sharply after 1987 when the government launched a major anti-poaching operation, which led to an increase in herds from 55,000 in 1989 to 110,000 in 2009. But the poaching has revived in recent years, driven by fast-rising demand for Ivory and Rhino Horn in Asia in tandem with growing Chinese influence and investment in Africa.

    ========  ======  ======
Ø  To get training on building group dynamics, advocacy, Human Rights and basic Legal Literacy which would give them the skills to lobby for a GENDER PROGRESSIVE NATIONAL LOANS POLICY which would be a Regulatory Mechanism for women to get access to soft loans which would take into account the fact that most women do not have collaterals in order to be “Loan Worthy”.

Ø  Assistance from marginalized women- friendly/supportive CSOs and trade unions during crisis for example when there are threats to the banda of Mama Lishe or when women who do  business in the informal sector get harassed by the police or by Municipal Authorities.

Ø  Not to get alienated from the mainstream business sector- their presence and initiatives need to be affirmed and respected.

Ø  To get support in their quest for a Gender Progressive National Loans Act, although most of the Marginalized Women do not believe it is possible.

Ø  To undertake awareness raising initiatives and peer education among the PLHIV community on HIV treatment and care and STI prevention because it is their Right to get information on protection from other infections.

Ø   For women engaged in sex workers to get alternative skills as exit points for when they decide to exit from sex work.

Ø  To get assistance and skills in dealing with official matters like obtaining letters from Local Government Authorities to be able to open bank accounts, to be able to get housing without hassle from bigoted landlords, to get their children registered in schools because single mothers tend to undergo discrimination and to get access to loans from lending agencies without bias, discrimination or extortion of monies or extortion of sex.

Ø  To obtain skills in saving their earnings, planning for retirement because small scale business women and farmers do not have pension schemes.

Ø  To get positive images of small scale business women and of women in the agricultural sector portrayed in the media as hardworking, voting citizens who should not be treated as second class citizens, and often, as invisible citizens.

Ø  To get protection for the land they own which could be appropriated by municipalities for foreign investors.

Ø  To get affirmation that they exist, that they have rights like other citizens including the right to respect because there is a prevailing culture in our communities to despise low income or poor peoples, especially poor women.

Ø  To operate without discrimination or harassment from Village or Local Government Authorities.

Ø  To be given access to training on business administration; book keeping; marketing; modern agricultural techniques; saving etc.

Ø  To have a say, and to own the processes that are currently being put in place like the New Constitution Process.

Ø  To have access to the Members of Parliament of their areas and to be given a hearing by their parliamentary representatives, who often avoid women who call on them for help and support!

The Nature of Poverty and of Economic Injustice

In the past, economic institutions and economy analysts relied heavily on income levels as the basis to measure poverty.

However, there is now universal agreement that dimensions of poverty far transcend this traditional definition.

In the current overview, poverty is a deprivation of essential assets and opportunities to which every human is entitled. (Source: Evan Carmichael- Social Discussions on Poverty Reduction, ILO).

Everyone should have access to basic education and primary health services.

Poor households have the right to sustain themselves by their labor and be reasonably rewarded, as well as having some protection from external shocks. (Source: The Beijing Platform of Action for Economic Justice)

Beyond income and basic services, individuals and societies are also poor—and tend to remain so—if they are not empowered to participate in making the decisions that shape their lives. Poverty is thus better measured in terms of basic education; health care; nutrition; breaking free of Gender Based Violence; water and sanitation; as well as income, employment, and wages.

Such measures must also serve as a proxy for other important intangibles such as feelings of powerlessness and lack of freedom to participate. (Source: Marjorie Mbilinyi while analyzing the Marginalization of Women in Economic Justice/TFMB/TGNP Meeting, 2009).

In practice, the most broadly used standard for measuring poverty will continue to be the adequate consumption of food and other essentials.

This yardstick (the poverty line) varies from country to country, depending on income and cultural values.

While national measurements are essential for measuring the impact of efforts to reduce poverty, the Economic Justice’s priority is on ‘Eradication of absolute poverty in the Tanzanian context’ with international comparison also being necessary.

The poor are not a homogenous group. Just as the nature of poverty is diverse, so, too, are its causes and victims.

The poor may not have acquired essential assets because they live in a remote or resource poor area; or because they are vulnerable on account of age, health, living environment, or occupation.

They may be denied access to assets because they belong to an ethnic or sexual minority or a community considered socially inferior, or simply because they are female or disabled. (Source: Temeke District Research, TFMB/TGNP, 2008).

At a broader level, poverty may stem from situations where gross inequality of assets persists because of vested interests and entrenched power structures. Finally, essential assets may not be available to the poor because of the lack of political will, inadequate governance, and inappropriate public Policies and Programs. (Source: TFMB/TGNP2008).

The primary responsibility for finding solutions to poverty lies with countries themselves, but success will depend on the united efforts of government and civil society, and on strong and sustained support to the community.

For all stakeholders, the strategies chosen to reduce poverty must be comprehensive enough to address all of its many causes. (Source: ADB POVERTY POLICY).

There is often conflict while addressing Poverty Eradication. The conflict can be between the body politic and the governance; conflict with multinationals; conflict with oppressive economic structures like Policy and Legislation and often, conflict with Patriarchy.
